Position Title

Substation Design Engineer (Electrical)

Position Summary

This position is responsible for designing, developing, and delivering primary electrical systems for Extra High Voltage (EHV) substations (132kV and above), ensuring compliance with national and international standards, client specifications, and project timelines.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities

  1. Design & Engineering
  • Prepare detailed designs for primary electrical systems including busbars, switchgear, transformers, isolators, circuit breakers, surge arresters, and earthing systems.
  • Develop single line diagrams (SLDs), general arrangement drawings (GAs), and equipment layouts.
  • Perform short-circuit, load flow, insulation coordination, and fault level studies.
  • Design earthing and lightning protection systems for substations.
  • Design Underground EHV Cables and accessories with routing
  • Ensure designs comply with IEC, IEEE, IS, and utility-specific standards.

2. Documentation & Deliverables

  • Prepare technical specifications, datasheets, and bill of materials (BOM).
  • Review vendor drawings and ensure alignment with project requirements.
  • Support preparation of tender documents and technical bid evaluations.
  • Maintain design records and ensure version control of engineering documents.

3. Leadership & Management

  • Lead and manage a team of design engineers and technical specialists.
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of technical excellence and accountability.

4. Coordination & Collaboration

  • Work closely with civil & secondary (protection & control) design teams.
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, and vendors for technical clarifications.
  • Provide engineering support during procurement, manufacturing, and installation phases.

5. Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure designs meet safety, reliability, and performance standards.
  • Conduct design reviews and risk assessments.
  • Support factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT).

6. Project Execution Support

  • Provide technical guidance during construction, erection, and commissioning.
  • Resolve site-related design issues and propose corrective actions.
  • Participate in project progress reviews and ensure timely delivery of engineering outputs.

Critical Success Factors - Essential

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar CAD tools.
  • Familiarity with ETAP, or similar power system analysis software.
  • Strong knowledge of IEC, IEEE, IS, and utility standards.
  • Understanding of GIS (Gas Insulated Substation) and AIS (Air Insulated Substation) technologies.
  • Understanding of underground EHV Cables & accessories.

Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical)

Experience:

  • 10–12 years of experience in design engineering of EHV substations (132kV, 220kV, 400kV, or higher). Hands-on experience with primary equipment design and layout.
